About the AVL - GeoIP Authentication
What is Geolocation?
Geolocation is the attempt to identify the real-world geographic location of an object, such as a cell phone or an Internet-connected computer terminal.
The AVL uses this technology to help determine if a user is located in the state of Alabama. If the user can be GeoIP authenticated then they are automatically logged in to use AVL resources.
How does this affect home access?
Using geolocation has made home access of the AVL much easier. If you're a student you can use the AVL the same at home as you do on your school campus or in your local library. Adults can access AVL resources within the state of Alabama without having to obtain an AVL card.
What about AVL Cards?
Most Alabama students are no longer required to have an AVL card for home access. If users travel or live out of state then they will need an AVL card to access AVL resources. Additionally, users that live near the state line and users who access the Internet via an air card, cell phone, iPad, satellite, or U-verse may not be automatically authenticated; these users will need to log in with their AVL Card.
How does it work?
If you're on the campus of an Alabama public school or library then you'll see this icon on the
of the top navigation bar.
If you're recognized as being in the state of Alabama but off campus you'll see this icon on the right side of the top navigation bar.
If you're not GeoIP authenticated you'll see this icon on the right side of the top navigation bar.
Simply move your mouse over the icon and type in your username and password on your AVL card.
If you enter a valid username and password the icon will change to this.
If you're having trouble, please contact the AVL Helpdesk.
